About this audiobook
★★★★★ A Fascinating Foundation of Ancient Cosmology
On the Heavens by Aristotle is one of the foundational works of ancient cosmology and a remarkable attempt to explain the structure, motion, and composition of the universe through reasoned argument.
Aristotle discusses the shape and position of the Earth, the nature of celestial bodies, and the behaviour of matter. His argument that the Earth is spherical, supported in part by observations of lunar eclipses, is especially striking. The work also sets out his theory of natural motion, according to which elements such as earth and fire move in different directions depending on their nature and their relation to the centre of the universe.
Just as interesting is Aristotle’s engagement with earlier thinkers, including the Pythagoreans and Democritus. By presenting and challenging competing ideas about matter, motion, and the cosmos, On the Heavens offers a fascinating picture of how ancient Greek philosophers tried to understand the physical world.
This E-Bookarama Editions edition is an excellent choice for readers interested in Aristotle, ancient science, cosmology, physics, and the history of ideas. Some of Aristotle’s conclusions have long since been superseded, but the intellectual ambition and historical importance of the work remain extraordinary. Highly recommended.
