About this audiobook
★★★★★ A Foundational Work of Western Philosophy
Categories by Aristotle is a remarkably important philosophical text about how we classify the things that exist in the world. Although concise, it provides a fundamental framework for Aristotle’s own thought and for centuries of philosophical debate that followed.
At the heart of the work is Aristotle’s categorial scheme: an attempt to identify the most basic kinds of things and the different ways in which we speak and think about them. These ideas underpin many of his later investigations, from change and time in the Physics to being in the Metaphysics and questions of ethics in the Nicomachean Ethics.
Its influence is extraordinary. Thinkers as different as Plotinus, Aquinas, Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Locke, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Brentano, and Heidegger all had to engage, in one way or another, with Aristotle’s categories. That alone shows how central this short work has been to the development of Western philosophy.
This E-Bookarama Editions edition is a great choice for students of philosophy, readers of Aristotle, and anyone interested in logic, metaphysics, language, and the history of ideas. Dense in places, but enormously rewarding and intellectually foundational. Highly recommended.
