About this audiobook

A Louisiana deputy became a viral sensation. Then he became a congressman. This is the story of what happened to the line between the two. Before he was "Uncle Clay," Clay Higgins was a twice-divorced car salesman drifting through his forties, convinced he'd lost something he couldn't quite name. Before that, he was a thirty-year-old at a Baton Rouge campaign rally, telling a reporter he'd voted for a former Klan leader for governor — and, in the same breath, calling that man a Nazi. What connects those two men to the congressman who cast the lone dissenting vote against releasing the Epstein files, 427 to 1, standing entirely alone against nearly the whole of the United States Congress? This book argues it's the same trait, deployed again and again across four decades: an almost total inability to simply go along. That trait built a folk hero. As a St. Landry Parish sheriff's deputy, Higgins traded scripted Crime Stoppers scripts for his own unfiltered, camera-ready warnings to gang members — equal parts menace and mischief, funny enough to land on The Tonight Show, direct enough to become genuinely, nationally famous as "Cajun John Wayne" within eighteen months. It also, more than once, blew up in his face: a video filmed inside an Auschwitz gas chamber that drew condemnation from the memorial itself; a Facebook post after the London Bridge attack so raw it needed no embellishment to become a national story. Both instincts — the one that built the folk hero and the one that built the controversy — belong to the same man. Uncle Clay follows that man from a South Louisiana horse ranch through three law enforcement departments, four marriages, an admitted use of unnecessary force he later recanted, a shock congressional upset over a thirty-year political veteran, a seat on the House Freedom Caucus, a role prosecuting only the second Cabinet impeachment trial in American history, a subcommittee gavel, and finally to that lone vote — cast, remarkably, by the same congressman who had spent the previous year as one of Congress's most aggressive Epstein investigators. Written with the narrative drive of Walter Isaacson and the documentary rigor of Doris Kearns Goodwin, this is neither a campaign biography nor a takedown. Every claim is sourced — to court records, government disciplinary files, congressional documents, and contemporaneous reporting — and cited in full at the back of the book. Where the record is contested, this book says so and shows you both sides rather than deciding for you. Where Higgins offered his own explanation for a controversial moment, that explanation is here, in his own words, alongside the documented objections of his critics. The result is a portrait of a man who has spent his entire public life refusing to hedge — and a larger story about what happens to American politics when the qualities that make someone irresistible to watch are not always the qualities that make someone trustworthy to govern. Whether Clay Higgins resolved that tension or simply embodied it more visibly than anyone else in Congress is a question this book raises far more confidently than it answers. For readers of political biography who want the full record — the folk hero and the controversy, the redemption story and the reckoning — told straight, in one book.
