What followed was one of the longest guitarist tenures in rock history: Barre played on every studio album from Stand Up in 1969 through The Jethro Tull Christmas Album in the 2000s, helping build the sound of records like Aqualung, Benefit, and Crest of a Knave — all while remaining, to most fans, a name in the liner notes rather than a story of his own.
Lewis traces that story from its unlikely beginning: a working-class Birmingham childhood in the shadow of the Blitz, a father whose own musical ambitions were cut short by necessity, an abandoned path toward architecture, and the grinding club-and-pub circuit of 1960s Midlands bands with forgettable names and unpaid gigs. From there, the book follows Barre's rise alongside Tull through arena tours, genre experiments, lineup upheavals, and the band's eventual institutional decline — and into his prolific solo career, spanning albums like Stage Left and Away With Words, that let him explore blues and rock territory his day job never fully allowed.
