Torah (Annotated)
Enriched Edition. Foundational Hebrew Bible Translation of the Five Books, from Creation and Sinai to Mosaic Law and the Wilderness JourneyBy Max Margolis, JPS
Length16h 47m
About this audiobook
Torah presents the foundational five books of the Hebrew Bible—Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy—as a unified literary and theological collection. Its narratives, legal codes, genealogies, poetry, covenantal speeches, and ritual prescriptions range from primeval origins to national formation. Standout episodes such as creation, the Exodus, Sinai, and the wilderness journey anchor a work central to Jewish scripture and world literature. Associated with Max Margolis and the Jewish Publication Society, this edition reflects a major modern effort to render the Hebrew Bible into dignified English for Jewish and broader scholarly readerships. Margolis's philological rigor and JPS's communal mission situate the volume within early twentieth-century Jewish intellectual life, where textual accuracy, tradition, and accessibility converged. The Torah's varied voices preserve ancient Near Eastern memory while shaping enduring Jewish law, ethics, worship, and identity. Readers should approach Torah as both sacred text and literary anthology: a volume in which mythic imagination, legal reasoning, historical consciousness, and moral inquiry continually interact. It offers an unparalleled opportunity to study multiple genres and perspectives within a single canonical framework. For students, general readers, and scholars alike, it fosters sustained dialogue between narrative, commandment, community, and interpretation.
