About this audiobook

In Max Margolis's hands, the Torah becomes a meticulous philological reading and a lucid literary exposition. Anchored in the Masoretic tradition—its vocalization and accents—this volume traces narrative and legal strata, clarifies syntax and motif, and sets the Pentateuch amid Ancient Near Eastern parallels and ancient versions. Its dignified prose balances classical cadence with precision, engaging rabbinic exegesis alongside measured modern criticism. Margolis, a Lithuanian-born American Semitist steeped in the Wissenschaft des Judentums, joined scholarly rigor to reverence for tradition. As editor-in-chief of the Jewish Publication Society's 1917 English Bible and coauthor of A History of the Jewish People, he refined principles of fidelity and clarity; those commitments inform this study's careful attention to Hebrew idiom and historical-linguistic context. Scholars, clergy, and serious lay readers will value this book's union of textual exactitude and literary sensitivity. It is suited to courses, study circles, and personal reading, guiding the perplexed without dogma. For anyone seeking a reliable, elegant companion to the Five Books of Moses, Margolis proves both exacting and humane. Quickie Classics summarizes timeless works with precision, preserving the author's voice and keeping the prose clear, fast, and readable—distilled, never diluted. Enriched Edition extras: Introduction · Synopsis · Historical Context · Brief Analysis · 4 Reflection Q&As · Editorial Footnotes.
