A reading of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper, with commentary woven through the story.
I stay close to Gilman’s text and step in when something changes enough to matter: who gets to define the narrator’s condition, what happens when her account carries less authority than John’s, and how writing, rest, secrecy, the room, and the wallpaper take on different meanings as the story moves.
The commentary follows those changes rather than trying to settle the story too early. John can care for her and still hold a kind of authority that leaves very little room for her disagreement.
The narrator can be right about her suffering without every later conclusion becoming equally reliable. And by the end, the reversal in the room can contain defiance, damage, and a much narrower kind of freedom at the same time.
