A quiet librarian named Thomas Hale discovers a mysterious book in his library that records disasters before they happen. As he and Mrs Bennett follow its warnings they manage to stop fires, floods, and accidents that could have harmed their small town. But when Thomas reads the final page he learns that a massive fire will destroy the entire town in fifty years, and he must ensure that future guardians of the library are ready to change that fate.
