There is a bank. Merchants Trust has a family-values clause and a board that will not partner with a bachelor whose associates have been described as unsavory enterprises. So he needs a respectable woman with no criminal record, no family ties to any organization, and an established presence in Port Liberty's cultural sector. In name only. Eighteen months. A quiet divorce at the end, her sister's debt cleared, her gallery kept, and a hundred thousand dollars on the way out.
What Sophia does not agree to is the rest of it.
A ledger she takes back with her own hands from the uncle who once smiled and called a loan family helping family, its pages filled with entries and names. An underboss named Marco, standing at the harbor window telling Dante she is a liability, then calling her sister-in-law to her face when he catches her somewhere she should not be. A warehouse, a gunshot, and Sophia kneeling on the floorboards of a moving car with both hands clamped over Dante's thigh, ordering him to open his eyes.
And a man who has to decide whether the thing he built is worth more than the thing he is becoming.
It ends with a case file officially closed, a syndicate turned into a foundation, a warehouse full of paper lanterns, and a man working out how to tell his mother he is getting married.
A closed-door mafia romance of inherited debt, a marriage signed as a business term, and a woman who never once offers to sell her gallery.
