Scoutmaster Brennan found all three on the same shelf of the same secondhand shop, on the same afternoon, Plain black covers. No author. No illustration. Just a title and a number.
The first counts letters — twenty-six stories, The second counts upward to twenty. The third counts hours, thirteen in all. He reads to fifty scouts camped at Millfield Farm, and each night the circle round the fire gets smaller, and the circle at the edge of the firelight does not.
Priya keeps a notebook.— she works out what Brennan has half known since the first night and hasn't wanted to say: who the extra listeners are, where they came from, and how long some of them have been waiting for somebody to sit down and tell them a story.
This complete edition gathers all three books in full, together with the connecting chapters — The Camp Shop, The Reading Room, and The Morning After — that carry the story between the nights.
