Eve Mallory always takes the window seat.
It's the only reason she sees the island — a green scrap of land in an impossibly blue sea, rising towards her far too fast, on a morning when her plane should have been nowhere near it. It isn't on any map she's ever studied. And Eve has studied a lot of maps.
Everyone survives the landing. That's the first strange thing.
The second is what she finds in a pool of water under a tree at the heart of the forest: a small dark stone, older than the world, that seems to have been waiting a very long time to be picked up.
The third is the rain. Because the rain has been trying to talk to her since the moment she arrived.
The stone will take Eve home. Ping and Pong and Ting are almost sure of it. They just can't say when, or how many impossible places she'll have to cross to get there.
And wherever it takes her, she must never let them further than an arm's length away.
