In 1919 The Journal of a Disappointed Man announced the death of an author who was still alive. It has been read ever since as the rawest diary in English. It is nothing of the kind. In 1917, dying and barely able to write, Bruce Frederick Cummings rebuilt fourteen years of notebooks into a book — cutting, rewriting, blanking out the name of his own disease, and planting footnotes that give the ending away. This is the life of the self-taught naturalist who did it, of the wife who knew what he did not, and of the book he made of himself.
