Scoutmaster Brennan has been reading to children round campfires for twenty years, and he knows a good book when he finds one. These three were on the same shelf, in the same shop on the high street — the kind of shop that appears in certain streets and isn't always there when you go back. The quiet man behind the counter wrapped them without being asked.
The first is called The Fire. Twenty-Six Stories. One for every letter. A is for Axe. B is for Blood. C is for Coffin.
Fifty scouts from eight troops have come to Millfield Farm for three nights in late October. Brennan builds the fire properly, the way his own scoutmaster taught him, and opens the book, and begins.
By the time he reaches Z, thirteen-year-old Priya has stopped writing down the stories and started writing down something else: a count of the children sitting in the circle.
Twenty-six stories for the first night. Every one of them has something at stake.
