About this audiobook
*The carriage door swung open, and the smell hit Elowen first - burnt sugar and wet stone, thick enough to coat her tongue.*
She steps down onto ash-black gravel, and a hooded servant asks for her brooch before she has crossed the yard. It is her mother's: a crescent of moon-ice in silver filigree, the only thing of worth she owns, the thing that marks her as Frost Court's daughter. *Wear it until they take it,* her mother told her. *Then forget you ever had it.*
Elowen Vance is the Frost offering. The citadel waiting for her is obsidian and basalt, windowless on its lower levels, lit from somewhere deep inside like a forge breathing. The heat comes at her in waves, and the frost in her blood stirs as if it has recognized an enemy.
Aldric Shaw does not give her a title. He circles her once, twice, then takes her left hand and turns the palm up, and sees the crescent scar there: a bond ritual that went wrong, a failure she carries like a brand.
*A bond-breaker,* he says.
*A survivor,* she says.
*The Ashlands don't distinguish between the two.*
Her quarters are a cramped room with a boarded window and three grey gowns that are not her size. Her maid is Maeve Darrow, who will report everything she does to the queen. Queen Bronwen's crown of obsidian pulses faintly with each breath she takes, and there is a trial coming that the two of them must face together.
Then a scribe with ink-stained fingers swears before the court that he saw the Frost envoy's palm glowing in the eastern corridor. An archivist named Tessara Harlow steps out of the crowd and gives Elowen an alibi that Elowen knows is false. An obsidian flake keeps appearing where she sleeps, always warm, even in an unheated room.
And beneath the citadel there is a grove of weeproots, which grow only where the veil between worlds is thin, and the journal of Aldric's dead brother Kaelen, who spent years mapping seven sealed doors.
A page comes to the door with the queen's message: if Aldric leaves the citadel tonight, Elowen's sister Sorcha will be dead by morning.
*The ash in your blood isn't a curse. It's a key. It opens doors that have been sealed for centuries.*
A fae romantasy of hostage courts, bonds that scar, false witnesses and sealed doors, in which the cost of a throne is counted in brothers and sisters. Closed-door.
