About this audiobook
A frost-burned feather lies on Theron's pillow, its edges crisped black where cold met flame and lost.
Lenora Ashford stands in the doorway of her brother's chambers in the heart of Embergard, presses a palm to the sheets and finds them stone cold. The window is cracked open. The bed is made too neatly for a boy who never mastered corners. Out in the corridor, two of her mother's guards report a quiet night and look anywhere but at her.
Queen Valora Ashford already has a scroll. Frost scouts crossing the Ashen Wastes, heading south, with a prisoner. She has ordered the war council convened and the army out at dawn. *"I will not let his capture derail a war I've been preparing for twenty years."*
Lenora does not think the Frost Court took Theron. She thinks it is convenient.
The feather is a message, and it takes her out into the Wastes alone, where a pale horse comes out of the ash and the man who dismounts is the Frost Court's heir. Darian Frostbourne has an identical feather in his own pocket and no more idea than she does who sent them. *"You're looking for your brother. I'm looking for answers. We'll both die alone if we don't talk."*
It goes badly. She has been hiding something her whole life, and under his sword it comes out of her in the open. Frost, from the hand of a Flame Court noblewoman. Dual-blood, the thing both courts have spent generations silencing in the cradle.
At the castle, Caspian Vex is waiting with his fire-opal rings and his permanent smirk. He has spent six months positioning himself at the Queen's right hand. He offers Lenora a marriage alliance as the cure for a scandal he arranged himself, and when she refuses he tells her, still smiling, that dying in the Wastes can be arranged.
Her one ally is Briar Thornwood, the gardener with soil under her nails and a silver locket she touches whenever she is frightened, who hands Lenora a hand-drawn map of the castle tunnels and a note reading *Trust no one with a ring of fire-opals.*
What Lenora and Darian are chasing turns out to be a crown broken into two pieces, and a prophecy the Oracle called not a solution but a warning. Darian's own father, Aldric, is standing on the other side of it.
A romantasy of two enemy heirs, one abducted brother, a scheming suitor with informers in every corridor, and a realm that has never once managed to hold fire and frost in the same hand. The romance is closed-door.
