About this audiobook

A doll lifts off the flagstones of the Ashford garden, hovers at eye level, and speaks in a woman's voice. *Seek the bloom that drinks both sorrow and fire.* Then it presses a finger to Lydia's forehead. *You will forget. You must forget.* By the time the black mark reaches Lydia's tongue, nobody in the manor remembers any of it. Physician Aldric holds a mirror to her lips, looks into her eyes, and says the thing the Ash court does not say out loud. *She has the Silence Blight. There is no cure.* Two weeks, he tells her sister. At most. Rosalind Ashford has no training and no authority. She has a dead mother the court still whispers about and a cousin, Clara, who wears a cracked obsidian brooch and smiles like a knife. So when a herald announces that Prince Dorian Valemont of the Ember Court has crossed the border demanding a parley about the blight, Clara nominates Rosalind for it in front of the whole hall. *Or watch your sister die in a room full of ash and silence.* Dorian is the one they call the Scorched Prince: burn scars up his forearm, copper eyes, decades of Ash and Ember grievance standing between them. He wants the blight stopped too. And neither of them is telling the other the whole truth. What they go after is the Ember Bloom, in the Forbidden Forest of Silent Ashes, a flower that only activates for equal parts sorrow and fire. What they get on the way is *a river that tried to eat our names*, a shade-knight made of grief, a dead courier carrying Clara's written orders, and a leather journal in a smuggler's vault in his mother's handwriting. *She didn't die. She became it.* Morgana Valemont made the Silence. Then she carved her name into her son's arm and walked into the ash, and she is the lady who has been standing at the foot of Lydia's bed. After that come a possession, a forged letter, a trial by sorrow in which Rosalind summons a dead woman to testify against her own daughter, a king on a throne of blackened bone who would rather the woman made of ash stayed a children's tale, and a wall of grey mist that has spent a month feeding on everyone's fear. *I loved you when you were the Scorched Prince with fire in your hands and smoke in your eyes.* Rosalind says it first, and then again, because once sounded like a whisper. This is a court fantasy romance of sorrow-magic and fire-magic, a garden that answers to one bloodline, a sister worth crossing a border for, and two people who finish the book in love and still walking toward the thing that made the blight, in a romance that stays closed-door.
