She never reaches the diner door. She watches Viktor cut a man's throat between the parked cars, wipe the blade on his trousers and polish his signet ring with a handkerchief. Then he looks up, straight at her, and what she sees in his face is not surprise. *He'd known she was here. He'd known she was watching.* A hand closes on her wrist. *The Pakhan wants a word.*
She wakes in a windowless basement on the Volodin estate, counting cracks in the concrete floor to keep the panic flat, and her younger brother Misha is somewhere in the same house making amends. The debt is one she thought was a kindness: the surgery the Bratva paid for after the accident, when she was seventeen and believed them.
The man who opens the door is Nikolai Demidov - Viktor's underboss, close-cropped hair going grey at the temples, no tie, a paper cup of coffee in one hand.
He is also, though it takes her a long time and several glasses of the vodka he only opens on confession nights to find out, feeding an FBI handler he has never met in person.
Nothing about the trap was accidental. Somebody inside Viktor's own house sent that text. A receipt gets dropped where Katya will find it. A phone with a direct line to a federal agent turns up somewhere she can steal it rather than be handed it. *I set you free*, Nikolai tells her, which is not the same as telling her the truth.
And there is a clause in Viktor's will: the liquid assets pass only if his daughter Irina is legally wed to Nikolai Demidov within twelve calendar months of his death.
So Katya has a ledger, a brother who made a terrible choice with a gun held to somebody else's sister, and a man who has been alone in this for two years. One plan between them. It ends with the Bratva dismantled or with all three of them in the ground.
A dark Bratva romance of ledgers, informants and inherited debt - closed-door, with a captive who counts to stay calm, an underboss running a two-year double game, and a brother worth going back for.
