Sofia buttons the grey cardigan over her mother's old dress, the fabric worn soft at the elbows, the name tag reading Rosa in faded embroidery. She found it at the back of her childhood closet, preserved by an instinct she did not know she had. The polyester smells of mothballs and memory.
She walks through the service gate at 4:17 in the afternoon carrying an empty laundry basket, hair pinned under a white cap. The guard barely looks up from his phone. She could be anyone.
The main house rises ahead of her, fieldstone and glass, a monument to money laundered through trucking companies and construction bids. In the kitchen, two women prepping vegetables stop talking when she comes in. She keeps her head down and keeps walking.
Her uncle described the layout over the phone, voice honeyed with false concern. *Go straight to DeLuca, Sofia. Tell him we want peace. He'll listen to you.* She wanted to believe him. She needed to, because her little brother is with him and he is all she has left.
*What do you want, Sofia?*
*My brother. I want him released to me, and I want safe passage out of New Jersey.*
What follows: one meal she refuses to eat, a scar she was not meant to see, thunder that burns off the last of her plan, a table that learns both their names, a piano broken in a house where nothing gets broken, a body she cannot bring herself to leave, and blood that tastes like the thing she has been avoiding admitting.

She came in through the service entrance to make a trade. Getting out with her brother is the easy half. The hard half is a man who has already decided what he wants and now has to make her believe he is capable of keeping it.
