About this audiobook

Almost everyone who gives up on tatting gives up in the same place, on the same afternoon: the small flip at the heart of the double stitch. Tatting looks as though it ought to be straightforward. One shuttle, one ball of thread, two hands and a comfortable chair. Yet most instruction hurries past the single movement that decides whether the craft opens up or closes for good. Steps that are genuinely fiddly get called “just” and “simply”. Diagrams assume you already know what a picot is. Patterns arrive as dense strings of abbreviations with no key nearby. And very little written about lace acknowledges what an older maker actually needs: light from the right side, a session that ends before the hands complain, and a step explained twice when twice is what it takes. Plenty of people put the shuttle down after an hour, quietly certain the craft is beyond them, when what was missing was never talent. It was a patient explanation. This book teaches shuttle tatting slowly and completely, from winding your very first bobbin to pinning out a finished doily of your own. It never calls a difficult step easy — where something is going to feel awkward, you are told so in advance, and told what to do about it. Inside this book you will: • Build the double stitch and its flip in small, unhurried stages, with a practice tape and a dedicated section for the afternoon the flip refuses to come • Work eighteen graded projects, from a half-hour bookmark to a five-round doily, each opening with a card giving skill level, active time, waiting time, finished size and techniques used • Learn rings, picots, chains, the second shuttle, joins, split rings and beading, each taught at the moment a project needs it • Read written patterns and diagrams without guesswork, using a full abbreviation key, glossary, technique quick reference and troubleshooting index • Turn lace into gifts worth giving — bookmarks, a flower, a snowflake ornament, medallions, edged handkerchiefs and linen, beaded earrings, a pendant and a mounted card • Block and starch your work, so a cupped, crumpled round of thread becomes flat, crisp lace • Adapt any step for stiffer fingers or changed close vision, with practical notes placed exactly where you will want them Shuttle winding, grip and thread choice; the double stitch and the flip; rings, picots, chains and joins; reading written and diagrammed patterns; flowers, snowflakes and multi-round medallions; edgings and insertions mounted onto fabric; split rings and climbing between rounds; beads and jewellery findings; blocking, starching and caring for finished lace; workspace, lighting, warm-ups and session length; thread and hook conversion charts; and the companionable side of the craft. This guide is for absolute beginners, for anyone returning to a craft set aside decades ago, and for older makers who want a calm, portable hobby that fits short sittings and produces things worth handing on. Left-handed makers are accounted for throughout, and both inch and metric measurements are given. Wind your first shuttle, learn one small paired knot, and let this book carry you from that first double stitch to lace with your name attached to it.
