A red-and-white swatch goes grey at one corner and the stain will not wash out; that is the whole diagnosis. A man moves home to rebuild his father's house and finds his own body has revoked its citizenship in a piece of cloth — the throat closing at a gas-station bin, the hand shielding against a neighbor's porch, the gag arriving on the smell of a flag a week old. He keeps a log to make it stop. It does not stop; disgust is the one emotion with no reverse gear, and the year only tightens the dose as the country decorates for its own two hundred and fiftieth birthday. Every clause of the argument that the symbol belongs to everyone is true, and the stomach convicts anyway, on contact, without appeal.
