The Need for a Provisional Morality While he doubts everything in order to find a firm truth, he needs a guide for acting in daily life. He decides to establish some provisional rules for behaving prudently while he constructs his definitive philosophy. --- 📜 2. First Maxim: Obey the laws and customs of the country Follow the religion and laws of the place where you live. Be as moderate and reasonable as possible, following the examples of prudent and balanced people. --- ⚖️ 3. Second Maxim: Be Firm and Decisive in Your Actions Although decisions may be dubious, it is better to follow them steadily than to act aimlessly. Firm resolve gives security and prevents indecision. --- 😊 4. Third Maxim: Conquer yourself more than destiny Try to change your desires before the outside world does. Inspired by the Stoics, he decides to seek inner happiness by adapting his mind to what happens, rather than desiring what he cannot change. --- 🏕️ 5. Fourth (implicit) rule: Choose the best possible occupation He dedicates himself to the study of truth and reason, considering it the most appropriate task for his life. --- 🧠 Final reflection on the chapter These rules are not definitive, but they allow him to live in peace while he searches for firm truths with his method.
