About this audiobook
The History of the Jewish People & The Jewish-Roman Wars presents one of antiquity's most consequential accounts of Jewish origins, institutions, sects, and resistance under Roman power. Moving from sacred history to eyewitness military narrative, Josephus combines biblical paraphrase, Hellenistic historiography, apologetic argument, and dramatic set-piece narration. The work stands at the intersection of Jewish memory and Greco-Roman literary culture, preserving indispensable testimony on Second Temple Judaism, Herodian politics, and the catastrophic revolt culminating in Jerusalem's destruction in 70 CE. Flavius Josephus, born Yosef ben Matityahu in Jerusalem in 37 CE, was a priestly aristocrat, Pharisaic intellectual, rebel commander, Roman captive, and finally imperial client under the Flavian dynasty. His divided loyalties and precarious survival shaped his historical project: he wrote to explain Jewish antiquity and dignity to the Roman world, while also interpreting the war as a tragedy born of factionalism, misrule, and providential judgment. This book is essential for readers of ancient history, biblical studies, political theology, and classical literature. Though never neutral, Josephus is invaluable: a sophisticated witness whose tensions make his narrative not less important, but more revealing.
