About this audiobook

Richard Francis Weymouth's *Weymouth New Testament in Modern Speech, 3 John* presents the brief Third Letter of John in lucid, idiomatic English designed to convey the force of the Greek without the archaisms of older English versions. The epistle's themes remain sharply defined: commendation of Gaius for his hospitality and fidelity, criticism of Diotrephes' authoritarian conduct, praise of Demetrius, and the apostle's hope for personal fellowship. Weymouth's rendering belongs to the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century movement toward readable biblical translation, combining attention to the Greek text with a concern that Scripture should communicate naturally to contemporary readers. Its concise prose preserves the letter's personal, pastoral, and ecclesial character while making its questions of leadership, truth, generosity, and communal responsibility accessible to modern study. Weymouth was a distinguished English classical scholar and New Testament translator whose command of ancient Greek shaped his lifelong effort to present Christian Scripture in intelligible modern language. A headmaster and educator as well as a textual scholar, he was attentive to the relationship between linguistic precision and public understanding. His translation work, published after his death, reflects the period's expanding interest in critical Greek texts and in revising inherited biblical diction. In 3 John, that background appears in the balance between philological care and conversational immediacy. This volume is recommended to readers seeking a focused introduction to one of the New Testament's shortest yet most revealing letters. It is especially valuable for students, teachers, pastors, and comparative readers who wish to examine how translation choices illuminate early Christian hospitality, authority, and fellowship.
