About this audiobook
The Life of Flavius Josephus is a compact yet richly strategic autobiography, less a private confession than a public defense of conduct, reputation, and authority. Written as an appendix to his Antiquities of the Jews, it recounts Josephus's priestly lineage, education among Jewish sects, and controversial command in Galilee during the Jewish revolt against Rome. Its style is forensic, self-conscious, and politically alert, blending memoir, apologetic rhetoric, and historiographical correction within the Greco-Roman tradition of self-vindication. Flavius Josephus, born Yosef ben Matityahu in Jerusalem in 37 CE, was a priest, aristocrat, rebel commander, Roman captive, and ultimately a historian under Flavian patronage. His extraordinary passage from Jewish resistance leader to client of the emperors Vespasian and Titus shaped both his historical perspective and his need to justify himself. The Life responds especially to rival accounts, notably that of Justus of Tiberias, and reveals an author negotiating loyalty, survival, and memory. This work is essential for readers of ancient history, Jewish studies, classical autobiography, and political self-fashioning. Though brief, it illuminates the moral pressures of conquest and collaboration, offering a rare first-person window onto the destruction of Second Temple Judea and the making of historical identity.
