About this audiobook
The Great Book of Good Night Stories gathers Thornton Burgess's beloved woodland tales into a capacious treasury of brief, gently suspenseful narratives for bedtime reading. Centered on familiar figures such as Peter Rabbit, Jimmy Skunk, Reddy Fox, and Old Mother West Wind's circle, the book combines animal fable, natural history, and moral instruction. Its prose is direct, rhythmic, and oral in manner, belonging to the early twentieth-century tradition of children's nature writing that sought to cultivate curiosity, sympathy, and ethical imagination. Thornton Burgess (1874–1965), an American conservation-minded author from Massachusetts, wrote from a deep affection for fields, streams, and forest life. His long career in children's literature was shaped by journalism, storytelling for his young son, and a desire to make the habits of animals intelligible without stripping them of wonder. His fiction reflects Progressive Era interests in education, character formation, and reverence for the natural world. This volume is warmly recommended to readers seeking stories that soothe without becoming trivial. Children will enjoy its lively creatures and clear conflicts, while adults will recognize its careful moral architecture and ecological sensibility.
