About this audiobook
Old Mother West Wind (Illustrated) gathers a sequence of gentle animal tales set around the Green Meadows and the Smiling Pool, where Peter Rabbit, Jimmy Skunk, Bobby Coon, and other woodland figures learn through curiosity, mischief, and consequence. Written in a lucid, oral storytelling style suited to bedtime reading, the book belongs to the early twentieth-century tradition of moral nature literature, blending fable, pastoral observation, and child-centered didacticism. The illustrations enhance its episodic charm, giving visual form to Burgess's carefully personified natural world. Thornton Burgess, an American author and conservation-minded naturalist, drew deeply on the landscapes of Cape Cod and his lifelong fascination with birds, mammals, and woodland habitats. His work emerged from a period when children's literature increasingly sought to cultivate humane attention to the natural world. Burgess's journalistic discipline, ecological curiosity, and affection for rural New England all shaped this inaugural collection of stories. This edition is warmly recommended to readers interested in classic children's literature, environmental imagination, or the origins of American animal fantasy. It remains valuable not only as a charming introduction to nature but also as a foundational work in Burgess's enduring fictional ecosystem.
