About this audiobook
The Violet Fairy Book, first published in 1901, is one of Andrew Lang's celebrated "coloured" fairy books, gathering tales from Romania, Japan, Lithuania, Portugal, Russia, and other traditions. Its contents range from enchanted animal-bride stories to quests, transformations, and moral trials, rendered in the clear, elegant prose characteristic of late Victorian literary retellings. Positioned within the fin-de-siècle revival of folklore and comparative mythology, the volume preserves oral narrative patterns while adapting them for a cultivated juvenile and family readership. Andrew Lang, a Scottish classicist, poet, critic, and folklorist, was unusually equipped for such a project. His wide learning in anthropology, myth, and ancient literature, together with his editorial collaboration with translators and collectors, shaped a series that sought to present world folklore as both entertainment and cultural evidence. The Violet Fairy Book reflects Lang's conviction that fairy tales reveal enduring imaginative structures shared across peoples and epochs. This volume is recommended to readers interested in folklore, children's literature, and the history of literary adaptation. It offers both narrative pleasure and a window onto Victorian ideas of culture, childhood, and the universal language of wonder.
