Laura Voglino trained as a scientist in chemistry and biology before turning to fiction. Born in Argentina, she is the daughter and granddaughter of Basque and Italian families who immigrated there in the mid-nineteenth century. Her mother, a history teacher, taught her that the past is never told only once, and that places shape our identity in ways no map can hold. Her historical novels begin from a single conviction: that the body is a first language, and that history is carried by people long before it is kept in books. She lives with her family in Durham, North Carolina.
