Ernie Richards was born in Liverpool and attended the Liverpool Institute High School. He read English at Cambridge University and later became Head of the Arts Department at I. M. Marsh College, Liverpool. He went on to serve as Principal of Urchfont Manor College, Wiltshire. His booklets include Blake’s Jerusalem, on how the hymn became England’s unofficial anthem and the Women’s Institute song; Shakespeare’s Women in Love, arguing that Shakespeare shows women as equal or superior to men in key ways; and 100+ Things Every Woman Should Know.
