Bennett Henderson Young

Bennett Henderson Young (1843-1919) was a Confederate soldier, Kentucky politician, and veteran advocate. He was born in Nicholas County, Kentucky and grew up in a family of farmers. During the Civil War, Young joined the Confederate army and served in various campaigns, including the Battle of Perryville, the Battle of Chickamauga, and the Battle of Missionary Ridge. He was eventually captured by Union forces and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of war. After the war, Young returned to Kentucky and became involved in politics. He served in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1876 to 1878 and in the Kentucky Senate from 1880 to 1884. He was also a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1884 and 1892. Throughout his life, Young was a strong advocate for Confederate veterans and their rights. He helped found the United Confederate Veterans and served as its commander-in-chief from 1905 to 1906. He also wrote a number of books and articles about the Civil War, including his memoir, "Confederate Wizards of the Saddle." Young was widely respected in Kentucky and beyond for his service to his country and his advocacy for veterans. He died in Louisville, Kentucky in 1919 and was buried with full military honors.
