Now he is back in the holler, humble and changed, doing the hard slow work of showing up, and Nina is standing at the loom of her own life with the shears in her hand, deciding whether to cut the whole thing off in one clean stroke or stop, and find the pulled thread, and try to reweave it. But a man named Delmar Sartin holds the note on the mill and has coveted their timber and their land for years, and he has the letters, and he means to use the ruin of a marriage to take everything the Ostrvales have. The only way they save the mill, the land, and their daughter's family is to stop running from the cut between them and mend it, in the open, together.
A cut you reweave holds. A cut you leave runs all the way to the end of the piece. Nina has to decide which kind of cut this is.
