The Open Coffin
The first shovel strike made a hollow sound.
Not the dull thud of soil. Not the scrape of stone. It rang, thin and empty, like tapping on a wall that shouldn’t be there.
Marlon paused, shovel half-buried. Listened.
The night held still around the cemetery. No wind. No insects. Even the road beyond the trees had gone quiet. Only the faint tick of cooling metal from the van behind them.
“Hit something?” Jace asked.
“Yeah,” Marlon said. He shifted his grip. Pressed the shovel down again.
The sound came back. Hollow. Close.
He glanced at the headstone. Fresh. The carved name still sharp. The soil should have been loose for another foot at least.
“Too shallow,” Jace said. He grinned. “Lucky us.”
Marlon didn’t return it. He dug slower now, careful, peeling the dirt away instead of driving through it.
