About this audiobook
Last Offering
The rice bowl was already warm.
Not steam-warm. Not fresh from the cooker. Warm like something had been holding it.
Jin stood at the small folding table in his grandmother’s living room and did not touch the bowl again. The incense sticks beside it burned straight up, thin lines of gray, no curl, no drift. The windows were closed. They had been closed since afternoon.
He looked at the front door. Still locked. The old latch hung in place, unmoved.
Behind him, his friend Kai laughed softly.
“Told you,” Kai said. “Someone came in through the window.”
“No one opened it,” Jin said. “You were sitting there.”
“I was on my phone.”
Jin did not turn around. The smell was wrong. Not the sweet, dusty scent of incense. Something under it. Damp. Like soil carried in on shoes.
The seventh month. His grandmother used to say it without smiling. Don’t whistle at night. Don’t step on the offerings. Don’t turn around if someone calls your name when you are alone.
