Edward Costello was an Irish soldier who spent more than a decade fighting across Portugal, Spain and France with Wellington's famous 95th Rifles. From the forced marches of the Peninsular War to the bloody breaches of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz, Costello experienced the Napoleonic Wars from the ground, alongside the men who carried the ladders into battle.
He survived repeated wounds, disease, hunger and the horrors of the battlefield. He fought at Salamanca and Vittoria, crossed the Bidassoa into France, and was wounded at Waterloo. Yet his military career did not end with Napoleon. More than twenty years later, he returned to Spain to fight in the First Carlist War, this time recruiting and commanding British volunteers.
The Waterloo Irishman presents Costello's remarkable memoir in a modern, accessible edition, preserving the immediacy and dark humour of a soldier who witnessed war from the ranks.
