You are about to hear Rebel Private: Front and Rear, the wartime memoir of William Andrew Fletcher, a Texas soldier who served in Company F of the Fifth Texas Infantry, part of Hood’s famous Texas Brigade. Written from memory decades after the Civil War, Fletcher’s account does not present the conflict through the eyes of a general, politician, or historian.
It is the story of an ordinary private soldier, told from the ground level, where war meant hunger, exhaustion, sickness, lice, forced marches, reckless courage, sudden death, and long stretches of rough humor between battles. Born in Louisiana in 1839 and raised in Texas, Fletcher enlisted in 1861 despite his father’s belief that the South had little chance of victory.
