Where the fire leaves no remains and the shadows are even more vivid than reality, Detective Mara Ellison is pursuing flames which do not comply with any laws of nature. Whole districts are being set ablaze without any reason and authorities are calmly complacent. Mara learns that the fire isn't a coincidence, the ember shades have some sort of secret agreement with the leaders of the city, and the underlying truth is that they need these compromises to stay alive.
Brought into a plot more ancient than the city itself, Mara has to deal with a council that is ready to kill people to protect their shaky tranquility. Its shades are becoming impatient, the Veil containing them is becoming weaker, and the equilibrium between saving and annihilation is on the verge of being broken.
