Iona Marek saw of the yellow sun was a photograph, and even that was a lie.
The photograph had been taken from a balcony in Lahore in the third week of the Broadcast, when the sky was already going the color of raw meat and the muezzins had stopped calling because the loudspeakers were needed for other announcements. In the photograph, a small child held up a piece of white paper toward the sun and the paper had a hole burned through the middle of it, a perfect black circle ringed in brown, and the caption underneath said So you can see it too. The child in the photograph was not looking at the sun. The child was looking at the person holding the camera. That was the lie. The sun had not made that hole. The White Sun had made that hole, three degrees off the true sun’s ecliptic, unraveling at last after eleven years of dutiful patching, and the photographer had wanted a picture that would seem heroic later and so had staged it.
