About this audiobook
A literary science fiction novel of grief, memory, and a machine that can only let you visit. The goodbye in St. John while the machine is in Texas. I resolved it on Schreiber's terms — the address is not a place, the address is the attention — and let Marcus go in unsolved, which also earns the "it's a door, not a vehicle" passage.
The cost leaves the "heart" abstract. I made it specific: the machine takes his memory of her voice. He keeps every word she said and loses the sound. The three voicemails survive and no longer land. It's the thing he'd been using to keep a piece of the future with her in it, so it's the one thing the machine could take.
Greta. Rather than a resemblance that stays, the photograph stops looking like Isabel in 2018 — an echo rather than a reincarnation, which keeps the book's epistemology honest and avoids a mystical payoff the ending doesn't need
