About this audiobook
Three figures walked out of the Gulf of Mexico and stopped eleven metres from forty thousand soldiers.
They never spoke. They never moved. For eighteen hundred and forty-six years a species photographed them, scanned them, played music at them, brought them children and animals and the sacred objects of nineteen traditions, and got back one measurement: four millimetres.
Then, on a morning in the year 1,847, the beach was empty.
THE COUNT is what we worked out afterwards — from the holes they left in the ground. Four thousand of them, on every continent, going back three and a half billion years. Cylinders of missing time, two metres across, with sealed floors and footprints that are not always feet.
They were instruments. Shaped like whatever was dominant that epoch. Here since before there was oxygen in the air.
Ours took eighteen centuries and covered a metre and a half of beach.
It finished. There is a result.
We will never be shown the total.
