That ratio is the most useful number a benefactor will ever meet.
Igwealor — attorney, economist, CPA — reads generosity the way an auditor reads a ledger, and finds the same transaction posted twice: as a receivable in the giver's mind, and as revenue in the receiver's. The two books never reconcile. That is the whole story.
The fallacy: the belief that a benefit creates an obligation proportional to its size, durable across time, and produced by the giving rather than by the character of the receiver. All three are false. The first is inverted — larger benefits produce weaker obligation, not stronger. The nephew whose education you financed writes no note. The stranger sends a card.
