Herculaneum was an ancient Roman city on the coast of Campania, in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, approximately eight kilometers southeast of Naples. Founded between the sixth and seventh centuries BC by the Oscans, an ancient Italic people, the city passed through Etruscan, Greek, Samnite, and Roman control before becoming a Roman municipium in 89 BC. Its name derives from the Greek hero Heracles — Hercules in Roman mythology — and according to legend, the city was founded by Hercules himself as
