Ballygally Castle stands on the Antrim coast of Northern Ireland, at the head of Ballygally Bay, overlooking the Irish Sea. It is a seventeenth-century fortified house built in the Scottish style — steep roof, high walls five feet thick, corner turrets, and narrow slits for muskets. It was constructed in 1625 by James Shaw, a Scotsman from Greenock who had come to Ireland in 1606 to seek his fortune.
