The Center's Sin
An Old Flame Sports RomanceBy Harper NashLength7h 24m
About this audiobook
Dash is a centre whose hands know the ball better than they know anything else in his life. Sasha is the one person holding a file that explains why, for one whole season, those hands were not telling the truth.
August in the city means ninety-degree heat and the smell of cut grass mixed with sweat and desperation. His hands find their home on the ball: left thumb across the laces, right palm against the smooth leather curve, fingers gripping the seams like they are the only thing keeping him tethered to the earth.
The centre's prayer. Snap, step, drive, don't think.
First team. First snap. First day of the rest of a season that might finally bury him.
*Nice and easy. Like you're handing me a beer.*
*Like you deserve one.*
The line settles into their stances around him, six men breathing together, a machine of meat and leverage. The whistle cuts the air. The defensive line comes across. Mack comes through the B-gap the way he always does, with something to prove, and the impact shudders up through a spine that has long since stopped keeping count.
What follows: a file she cannot ignore, scars he does not show anybody, a public service announcement that betrays them both, a promise he already knows he cannot keep, a rookie she cannot save, a midnight confession, and a fundraiser she never wanted to attend.
*I threw games. I cost my team wins. I lied to everyone I care about. It's absolutely my fault.*
*You did it for Lucy.*
That is true, and it is not a defence, and both of them know the difference.
*You could sound happier about it.*
*I'm cautious. There's a difference.*
There is a version of this where he keeps the confession to himself, finishes the season, and nobody ever finds out. That version is gone by the second chapter. What is left is the slower kind of reckoning, conducted in daylight, in front of people who are owed one.
And even then, forgiveness is not promised to him by anybody in this book.
