The Battle of Hunayn is the battle the Quran grades. Two verses — "Allah has given you victory on many occasions and on the day of Hunayn, when your great number pleased you, but it availed you nothing, and the earth narrowed for you despite its breadth, and you turned back in flight. Then Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers, and sent down soldiers you did not see, and punished those who disbelieved — and that is the recompense of the disbelievers" (9:25-26) — hold the whole battle: the victory's history, the number's failure, the earth's narrowing, the flight, the tranquility, the unseen soldiers, and the punishment.
