Nicomachean Ethics by Aristotle is one of the most influential works ever written on moral philosophy and one of the earliest systematic attempts to answer a timeless question: how should we live?
At the heart of the book is Aristotle’s exploration of virtue, reason, character, and happiness. He argues that human flourishing is not simply a matter of pleasure or good intentions, but of developing good habits and acting well over the course of a complete life. Virtue, for Aristotle, is something practiced and cultivated, and the good life is closely connected with reason, balance, and purposeful action.
The work has shaped ethical debate for centuries and remains central to discussions of virtue ethics. Later philosophers, from Kant to contemporary thinkers such as John Rawls, have continued to engage with many of the questions Aristotle raises about happiness, responsibility, justice, and what it means to live well.
The title traditionally refers to Nicomachus, a name associated with both Aristotle’s father and his son, though its exact origin remains uncertain.
