El argumento vincula cultos dispersos, pesadillas, arqueología y episodios marítimos hasta sugerir una mitología anterior a la civilización. Su prosa, deliberadamente solemne y arcaizante, explota la atmósfera, la insinuación y el horror de lo inconmensurable más que la descripción explícita. Publicado en 1928, el relato se inscribe en la tradición del cuento gótico y fantástico, pero la transforma mediante un terror cosmológico que sustituye lo sobrenatural religioso por una indiferencia cósmica radical. Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937), escritor de Providence formado en la literatura clásica, la tradición gótica y la ficción extraña, convirtió sus intereses en astronomía, antropología imaginaria y decadencia histórica en los fundamentos de los Mitos de Cthulhu. Su sensibilidad marcada por el aislamiento, la nostalgia aristocrática y el temor a la alteridad favoreció una concepción del universo hostil, donde el conocimiento puede conducir a la locura.
