La llamada de Cthulhu es un relato o novela corta escrita en 1926, pero publicada por primera vez en febrero de 1928 en la revista pulp Weird Tales. El relato se divide en tres partes: "El bajorrelieve de arcilla", "El informe del inspector Legrasse" y "La locura del mar".
La historia comienza con Francis Wayland Thurston, quien revisa los papeles de su difunto tío, el profesor Angell, un experto en ocultismo. Francis descubre que su tío investigó un extraño culto relacionado con la figura de Cthulhu, una criatura que apenas guarda rasgos humanos. Al profundizar en la investigación, Thurston encuentra el testimonio de Legrasse, un inspector de policía de Nueva Orleans que en 1908 participó en una redada contra un grupo que rendía culto a Cthulhu. El símbolo utilizado por esta secta coincidía con el que aparecía en el bajorrelieve de arcilla que Angell había estudiado, el cual contenía inscripciones jeroglíficas y otros símbolos desconocidos.
A través de documentos, descubrimos que Legrasse y Angell confirman que el culto al monstruo submarino tiene raíces antiquísimas, remontándose a civilizaciones perdidas. Los relatos antiguos describen a este ser inmortal que habita en las profundidades del océano y que despertará cuando las estrellas estén alineadas, trayendo consigo la destrucción de la humanidad. Esta historia recuerda al Leviatán bíblico.
