Despite the challenges and the growing controversies, Dee and Kelley remained in Bohemia for a considerable period, moving between Prague and other centres of influence. They sought out other wealthy patrons, including Polish nobility and various German princes, always hoping to find individuals who would offer them more consistent and generous support. These were years of constant travel, of pleading for funds, and of presenting their elaborate claims to a succession of skeptical yet curious audiences. Dee’s reliance on Kelley became absolute. Kelley was not just the scryer; he was the alchemist, the negotiator, the face of their enterprise in many dealings, and the primary source of whatever income they managed to secure. Dee, in turn, provided the intellectual authority, the supposed divine sanction, and the historical legitimacy for their endeavors.
