33With the help from one of the gun shop employees, he finds a rangefinder he likes, and sets up the rental agreement. He also obtained some additional information about ballistic calculators. Having what he needs, for now, he heads home. Between making calls to realtors, and working with the rangefinder, his weekend is going to be quite busy.
2SECTION 2: OUTLINE
34The phone was an antique style old Western phone, mounted outside the tack room, that his mother had insisted on having in the barn. He never bothered to change it, because it always prompted fond memories of his mother.
3SECTION 3: CHAPTER 1 – THE PANEL - PART 1
35Enjoying the leisure drive to the convenience store in his Porsche, he reaches his destination. Entering the store, the clerk acknowledges his presence, grabs the fax, and motions for him to come get it. Smiling at the clerk’s gesture, Keene responds “I need to grab a few things while I am here, and will be over there shortly.” The clerk acknowledges with a nod of his head, and continues to help other shoppers in the store. Keene grabs some of his favorite snacks, and some pistachio ice cream, before walking over to the cashier to check out.
4SECTION 4: CHAPTER II – MEETING THE NEW CHALLENGE
36There were occasions when he would even offer to take them for a ride. However, tonight was not one of those occasions. He was too anxious to get home, to see what information the realtor had faxed to him. Being in the middle of working on a request, often dominated his other activities.
5SECTION 5: CHAPTER III – PROOF HE CAN
37After checking some of the local headlines, he turns to the entre nous section of the personal column. Searching for a post labeled Hello SG, he was surprised to see another one titled Hello SG-Lab82; Seeing it, he quickly grabbed a pencil and paper to write down the coded phrases, leading to the words. Happy are they of nine. When deciphered, the ninth word was Warning. The next phrase leading to a word was, Welcome me at this two. Making the second word Well, and the last phrase led to the word Guarded. Keene, logically surmised the requester was letting him know the meth lab was under heavy guard. He was thinking that maybe, after he had notified them stating he figured out the location and accepted the request, they wanted him to know there was an additional risk involved. This is great added intelligence. I will make sure I am well camouflaged, he thought to himself.

38His excitement, regarding the overall challenge of this request, was greatly intensifying. I better start laying out a plan of action so tomorrow I can obtain everything I need at the gun shop, he thought, as he began making a mental list. OK, I have the reloader machine and gunpowder. I am going to need some 50 cal. hollow point shells that I can modify, the rifle and adjustable stand and a camouflage outfit. I’ll go to the gun shop early tomorrow. That will provide me with plenty of time the rest of the day to get familiar with all the equipment.

12Several days had passed, and the news regarding Hoffa’s disappearance had turned into a media frenzy of conjecture. There were lots of theories and speculations of who might be involved, along with what they did with the body. It was exactly what was expected.

13With proof positive, what he is capable of, he remained confident there would be requests. The recipients of the letter, probably shocked by the headlines, should now relinquish any skepticism that existed, and take the letter seriously. His only thought at the moment was, how long until someone sends a request. Naturally, the anxiety and curiosity greatly intensified, as the waiting game began.

17It wasn’t until Monday, August 4, five days after the abduction, until he saw a Hello SG post in the paper. This is actually a lot sooner than I had expected. He thought to himself, as he excitedly wrote down what was posted. Hello SG Bud. If black so what twelve. How after bus can twenty. How again four make eleven. Ok, now to figure out the three words. As he goes to the appropriate section of the newspaper to start deriving the words in the code. If is section two, he thinks to himself, and turns to that section of the paper. Next, Black is page five, as he turns to the fifth page, So, is column two, directing his eyes to column two. Ok, the next word is what, which means paragraph four. Locating the fourth paragraph, he starts counting the words. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 making his way to word number twelve, which was Hotel.

18He proceeds to decode the two remaining coded phrases and deciphers the next word to be Broad and the last word to be Walnut. Wow, the start of an actual request. I am guessing that somehow a hotel must be involved. Not enough information yet to do any research though, I’ll just need to be patient and wait, he thought.

19Not much he can do until he receives the next communication, with more words. Then he will be able to outline the needed research, and begin to develop a workable plan. If the requester correctly follows the instructions in the letter, he should get the next post tomorrow.

52“Gentlemen”, Robert utters in a moderate voice, “Since no one has anything else they want to discuss, we can call it a day. I have everyone’s personal contact information, and will contact you to reschedule, as soon as I know what the next step is. What I will do is communicate the panel’s request to our subject and get his response. Hopefully, there won’t be any scheduling conflicts, getting everyone back together again. If any conflicts happen to pop up, we will just have to schedule around them as best we can. We don’t want any personnel changes on this panel.”
21There it was, the second post titled Hello SG Bud. He wondered who it was from and what it would be about, hoping it would be a request he would be able to accept. Carefully following the code, he deciphers the next three new words to be Philadelphia, Want, Bankrupt.

22Now, with more information at hand, he could begin his research. Although he hated to assume anything, he would conclude at times would need to make a few presumptions, to see where it led him. His first presumption would be that the code words Broad and Walnut, might be intersecting streets where the hotel is located. He got out his Road Atlas and opened it to Pennsylvania and then looked for the Philadelphia inset. Finding Walnut Street, it looked like his first presumption was correct as he ran his finger along the route to see where it led him to. Bingo, he thought to himself, as he confirmed Walnut Street did intersect with Broad Street. The Atlas identified a hotel named The Bellevue Stratford as being located there. Having this information, he will start the process of coming up with ideas.
54SECTION 8: CHAPTER VI - THE PANEL – PART 3
23He was a little curious why they wanted this particular hotel to close down, but their reason was not his concern. He did surmise it most likely had to do with finances, or wanting the property. His main concern at this point was how to bankrupt a hotel. His mind started filling with a barrage of thoughts. How do I bankrupt a hotel? This is going to require a visit to the library to learn more about how a hotel makes its money. I know the obvious is through their room bookings, but maybe there are other ways. This is exactly the type of challenge I was hoping to get. Now to come up with a solution. Not only one that will cause a hotel to go bankrupt, but in a way that no one suspects any foul play. His thoughts continued as he headed to the library, to start his research on hotels. Once he arrived at the library, he found several books on the subject and checked them out. His library card and his elaborate collection of encyclopedias, were two things he greatly valued as tools that contributed to his vast knowledge.
55Still openly discussing their concerns, as they enjoyed the coffee and donuts, they began to make their way to their seats.
24After a full day reading the several books he had checked out at the library, he gained a lot of information about the operation of a hotel. He was particularly interested in all the different risks and liabilities they had to deal with and what contributed to their overall profitability. The profitability was somewhat simpler to understand. Their biggest profit potential was conventions. The risks, however, they had to deal with were more complex. That would be the area he would concentrate on first. It was obvious a hotel’s reputation of cleanliness, food and customer service would be paramount to their success. This would definitely be his main concentration.
56It was almost 9:30 a.m. and still no word from Keene. Robert was starting to worry, and certainly didn’t want the panel to start getting anxious. A few seconds later the phone in the conference room started ringing. Robert quickly grabbed the handset and says “Hello, this is Robert Klein.” The caller responds, “Hey Robert, this is Keene. Please offer my apologies to the panel for being late.”
25It soon became clear to him. He must come up with a way to completely attack the hotel’s reputation. It must be destroyed publicly, and to the level, it would deter anyone to ever again consider staying there. This is going to require more research, he thought, as he realized it would take some sort of catastrophic event to achieve the result needed. Something more than just bad food or bad service.
57“I stopped to get some copies made, and it took longer than I expected. I should be there in 15 or 20 minutes.” Robert then tells Keene, “I will let the panel know, and we will see you when you get here.”
26During his research, he learned that the American Legion had an event scheduled for July 1976. A three-day event in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the signing of the US Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia in 1776 and they are expecting over 2000 Legionnaire Members to attend. Although it was about a year away, it would be the perfect scenario for a catastrophic event that could destroy the hotel’s reputation, and thus force them into bankruptcy. But first, he will need to make sure whoever made the request is in agreement with the time frame, and then come up with a plan. He obviously needed to send a message to the requester and get their reaction. The message will require it to be written in such a way, it vaguely discloses the time frame, and why. It also must conform to the prearranged method for communicating. After a few minutes of thought, he had the post ready. “To SG’s Friend - Bud – guaranteed results can be achieved at an event if you can take 12 doses?” and called it into the paper. He had no qualms about placing posts in the newspaper. There wasn’t anything in any of the posts, received or sent, that would cause any concern. They looked like typical idle chatter in the personal column.
58Sharing the details of the phone conversation with the panel, Robert let out a distinguishable sigh of relief. He did not know Keene personally, and although he seemed friendly, intelligent and genuine, he could only judge him by the past interviews. Additionally, Robert often felt intimidated whenever he had to deal with Keene one on one.
27Continuing the research as he awaits a response, his hope was by including the word event in the post, they would surmise it had something to do with the time frame and should not object. Afterall, the request was to force the hotel into bankruptcy in a way there would be no suspicion of foul play, linked to anyone. There was nothing in the request indicating it had to be done within a certain time frame, and besides, his rules for accepting a request clearly stated he would not accept any requests calling for immediate action, or has any kind of time frame for completion, because perfection takes time.
59Sounding concerned, Dr. Scheffield interrupts; “That decision certainly puts all of us in a precarious situation.”

61“You are right, Professor.” Keene answered and continued. “By proving to you I have the ability to commit a perfect crime, unified with the fact I know everyone here, you really have no other choice but to comply. Simply put, the only thing you need to do in order to comply, is to forget all about me and this inquisition, or else.”

62Then suddenly, right as the panel was beginning to examine the hotel receipt, Keene loudly exclaims as he is walking out the door;
31There have been times, while working on the hotel project, when he questioned if he had bit off more than he could chew. It was the very first request, and perhaps his eagerness played a role in the decision to accept it. Doesn’t matter at this point. He accepted it, notified the requester, and gave them a time frame they accepted. There was no backpedaling now.
63“I can and I did.”
32Time to head home, he thought, as he looked at his watch. He hadn’t realized how much time had passed while at the library, sporting goods store, and gun shop. The closer he got to home, the more excited he got. He couldn’t stop wondering what might be in the paper, regarding the lab request.
