Nacido Eric Arthur Blair en 1903, Orwell fue funcionario colonial en Birmania, periodista, observador de la pobreza y combatiente en España, experiencias que alimentaron su rechazo del imperialismo y de toda forma de totalitarismo. Su compromiso con un socialismo democrático, unido a una aguda conciencia de las contradicciones de la izquierda, explica la tensión intelectual que atraviesa estos escritos: defender la justicia social sin sacrificar la verdad, la autonomía individual ni la responsabilidad crítica. La biografía del autor no funciona como simple anécdota, sino como laboratorio de sus ideas. Se recomienda ampliamente esta edición a lectores interesados en la literatura política, la historia intelectual del siglo XX y la relación entre poder, propaganda y lenguaje. Aunque algunos textos responden a debates coyunturales y ciertas generalizaciones pueden discutirse hoy, su lucidez conserva una vigencia excepcional.
