Nacido Eric Arthur Blair en 1903, Orwell fue funcionario colonial en Birmania, periodista, observador de la pobreza y combatiente en España, experiencias que alimentaron su rechazo del imperialismo y de toda forma de totalitarismo. Su compromiso con un socialismo democrático, unido a una aguda conciencia de las contradicciones de la izquierda, explica la tensión intelectual que atraviesa estos escritos: defender la justicia social sin sacrificar la verdad, la autonomía individual ni la responsabilidad crítica. La biografía del autor no funciona como simple anécdota, sino como laboratorio de sus ideas.
